Outsiders Newspaper Report

On Friday afternoon in Windrixville, Oklahoma there was a fire at the church where two teenage boys had been staying. The church was located at the top of a hill. One of the teenage boys age 14 tells us "It was a small church, real old and spooky and spiderwebby. It gave me the creeps".

As the two teenage boys drove past the church where they had been staying, they saw that it was on fire. The 14 year old boy thinks that him and his friend must have started the fire with a cancer stick so they jump out of the car to examine the fire. In the process of examining the fire the teenage boys find four school children in the corner of the church huddled and terrified. As the two juveniles lift the children out of the window and while getting the last child out of the window the roof caves in. The 16 year old teenager pushed his 14 year old friend out the window but, he is still inside and starts to scream. The 14 year old juvenile tried to go back in to save his friends but was hit across the back and was knocked out.

When the youngest juvenile wakes up he is in an ambulance. The juvenile is told that his life was saved by the jacket that his friend lent him. The 14 year old says that his friend was burned but “will probably be fine”. The kids are hoping for the best. The 16 year old Juvenile was in a very bad shape at this point and nobody knew if he would be ok. Sixteen year old juvenile was in critical care as he was hit by the roof on his back. The teacher that was in the ambulance jokingly asks the youngest juvenile if him and his partner are professional heroes but he replies with “we are juvenile delinquents, take me to the hospital and you will find out there".

The oldest juvenile remained in the hospital under critical conditions. On the other hand, the school children and the parents were very thankful they were saved and prayed for the other that they would be healed. In the end, the community came to the realization that the greasers are not stereotypical hoods. They lived in a harsh and violent world but the teenage boys have courageous and loyalty values. The stereotypes that defined ‘greasers’ did not define them as individuals. Each greaser was different and are not all bad people. They faught to help others and are brave people. The greasers sacrificed their lives for the lives of others. The 16 year old has been pronounced dead and the 14 year old is partially healed.

Sunset Poem

Sunset, God's creation that sets slowly below the calm waters
The sun is beautiful
It relaxes your body as it ends the day
Makes you thankful
It sets in the east and the west
The orange sky brightens the day
It's the ending of the day
But, a new beginning

Story Frame
Outsiders

In this story, the problem starts when Ponyboy walks alone in the ally and is threatened to having his throat slit. Sodapop and Darry come to his rescue and chase the bullies away but, are upset because he doesn't realize the importance of not walking alone especially at night. The Soc's are the gang members from the West side of the town and they are a high class group. The Greasers are from the East side and are low class members. They grease their hair and flick it back. Ponyboy needs to understand that they are in this as a family and he must always be with someone at all times, never alone.

After that, the Greaser guys go to the drive-in theater where they find two beautiful girls sitting in front of them. The girls are girlfriends of the Soc's but, they happen to be out drinking while the girls are at the theater. They flirt with the girls but, Darry is rude. He tries to get them to consume alcohol but instead Cherry the cheerleader girl throws it in his face. He comes back with pop to try and cool them down. Cherry has noticed that Ponyboy is different from his brothers and they come to the conclusion that they have alot in common. Cherry needs to leave separately and not with the Greaser boys to avoid fights.

Next, Ponyboy gets home late after taking the girls back with Johnny and his brother Darry is angry and slaps him in the face. He is frustrated because he stayed up late waiting for Ponyboy to get home but, he fell asleep not realizing what time it was, he runs home at two o'clock in the morning. Ponyboy runs away from home and is attakced along with Johnny by the Soc's at the park which is not their territory. They shouldn't be there. One of the Soc's tries to drown Ponyboy by pushing his head and holding it under the water fountain meanwhile, Johnny kills Bob which is Cherry's boyfriend. He does this to protect himself and Ponyboy from being drowned. When Ponyboy gets up he notices a pool of blood surrounding Bob.

Then, Johnny and Ponyboy go to get Darry as he is the number one killer. He gives them money and sends them on a train to an abandoned church for a week. The boys cut their hair and use peroxide to bleach it. They are doing this to disguise and change their identity. Ponyboy now has short blond hair and they remove all of the grease from their hair. It becomes easier to not be identified as a greaser.

They finally solve the problem of the church being on fire when, Johnny and Ponyboy rush into the church and help save the school children inside. As Ponyboy tries to escape the roof caves in and he blacks out. The ambulance arrive on scene and when Ponyboy wakes up he realizes he is in the hospital along with Johnny, who is in critical care and is on urge of dying. Ponyboy is being treated for his burn as Johnny has a very hard time trying to survive. Johnny escapes from the hospital at the rumble between the two gangs. Johnny goes back to the hospital after the greasers win the fight and Dally and Johnny follow him there. Johnny dies. They are now responsible for telling the bad news to their brothers while trying to deal with their own emotions. Ponyboy woke up at home the following day and realizes the value of his family and how precious they are to him. He realizes that Darry cares so much for him and that his way of showing that was through his frustration. In the end of the book, Ponyboy writes a novel.

Chapter 7-9 Questions

What did Ponyboy learn at the end of Chapter 6 about his family?

Ponyboy realizes that Darry really does care. Pony goes and hugs Darry the way he hugs Sodapop. The three brothers reunite and realize that they all really do care for one another. Darry is just doing his job being the older sibling and acting like and mom and dad to his brothers while Ponyboy see's this more and more by his actions.

What threat does Juvenile court have on the Curtis family? If the judge decides to separate Ponyboy, Sodapop and Darry, how would it affect each of the boys?

This would separate the family and they would not have each other anymore when in danger. Darry cares for the brothers and does not want to be alone. He wants them all to stick together and be a happy family. Ponyboy wants the same and Sodapop needs his older brothers also when he is alone. Especially at night.

How does Two-Bit explain "greasers" to Ponyboy? (P.113) What influence does this have on Ponyboy?

He says that it isn't good to be a greaser and to be alone in an alley without anybody to help you. This influenced Ponyboy because it opened his eyes more. He realizes the importance of having someone with you at all times when in a gang like the greasers. Therefore Ponyboy would not go alone again into an alley alone and get jumped. (Middle of page 113)

Personal Reflection
Writing Entry

When you are born, you are gold. In the middle of your life you will fall and in the end of it all you loose and experience all the bad things. When I was a little girl I was innocent. I knew nothing about death, sin and grief. I lived in a world without troubles. When I was born I never knew how hard the real world was going to be or what laid ahead of me. As I grew up, I begun to experience the bad things like loosing loved ones at a young age. I had never imaged life would be this hard. I thought it would remain easy and nothing hard would come upon my shoulders.

When I was suspended in grade 10 for getting into a fight with another girl in my grade it was the first time that I really found out the kind of things that made me angry. I lost my temper on numerous occasions and did not know how how to control it. I threw a chair across the class room hitting her right in the eye. Immediately, she started crying and I thought to myself, did I really just do that? Why did I get so angry? The reason I got so angry and lost my temper was because a girl that I never knew was speaking negatively about my race. Just like in the outsiders novel, Ponyboy realizes that bad choices are what make bad things happen in life, which was what happened to me. I thought high school was going to be the best time of my life but, later became one of the hardest times in my life.

I have been a better person because of the bad actions and choices I made in my previous life. I have realized that all the good things in life do not really last for a long time, they come and go just like the seasons do. The actions I made in high school were the actions that were in the middle of my life. In the middle of life we all fall and go through bad things and this was what happened to me.

Opinion Piece
22 Jump Street

Jenko (Channing Tatum) and Schmidt (Jonah hill) are on the hunt to solve a drug case but, are sent off to college by their director Ice Cube. We all know there is nothing but, lectures, parties, sports, dorm life and mostly, hooking up with girls! Like most teenage boys do when they enter college. However, the two stars Jenko and Schmidt are about to experience this while they also try to solve the drug case as undercover police officers.
They separate for a while due to different identities which they experience during the duration of the film. Originally, they are thought to have the same identity but as you watch the film you find out that their physical appearance and attitude towards things you notice that they are completely different. Schmidt likes being the calm guy chilling with a pretty girl drinking wine, not partying and nightclubs with dudes and playing football. This is what Jenko likes doing. Schmidt is chunky, short blond hair and is average height, Jenko is tall, built and has short dirty blond hair with very broad shoulders.

In the movie, I find that one of the big problems and lessons that they teach is that when you go to college know your reason on going. Is it for partying and hanging out with chicks all night? Or is it for solving a drug case as an undercover policeman? One of the main problems in this particular movie would be distraction. Schmidt hooks up with his director’s daughter not knowing who she really is. He sees her sitting alone on a bench at night and has a nice conversation with her. He makes her smile and giggle, just what a guy tries to do when he wants a girl’s attention, right? Schmidt tries to tell Jenko that they have different identities, he notices that they have two completely different cliques. Jenko’s group are the people that drink all night and play beer pong while Schmidt’s group are the ones who hang out at the art studio and drink wine while socializing with their friends having meaningful conversations that they can remember the next morning.

Another problem I have noticed, is that they face a lot of hard challenges and help each other to overcome those challenges. It sends a message to the viewers that sometimes when things are hard in life, you just need a true friend. Jenko chooses to stay at the college and accept his scholarship to play football. He chooses to stay with his group of friends that do not so good things while Schmidt chooses to try and do his job and stay on task. Meanwhile, Jenko and Schmidt meet up after the horrifying news that Ice Cubes daughter was the one that Schmidt was with. After finding out he was dating his director’s daughter and being dumped he chooses to go back to Jenko. They find each other in a field of bright green grass one morning and try to accomplish their goal together. They manage to shoot the bad guys that have been after them since the beginning of the movie and set a bomb off in order for the bad guys to die.

Overall, I found this movie interesting as it had a bit of a twist to it. It ended with a cliffhanger making you want to watch the third one, when they go to medical school. I wondered what would change if they went there and if they would be better at finding the drug case. Maybe, they would be more focused in med school who knows. The movie shows that you can do anything if you put your mind to it. They got the goal in the end after having drunk nights, hangovers and messing up with the director’s daughter. Anything is possible in life, when you put your mind to it and with a good friend who is always by your side. These friends are nothing alike but, their fiction makes them a good team.

Summary Template
Info taken from Chapters 1-4 of 'Outsiders' novel

The outsiders is a novel about a boy by the name of Ponyboy. It is about loneliness, misunderstanding and innocence and sometimes even being different as Ponyboy is the one that stands out among the gang. He is not only intelligent but not the same as the other gang members as he mentions in the first chapter on page 1 of the novel.

Ponyboy says "I'm not like them", this quote shows us that Ponyboy is aware of the way that he stands out in the gang Greasers. He says " Nobody in our gang digs movies and books the way I do", once again showing his way of being different and a bit of loneliness. On page 2 paragraph 1, we notice a misunderstanding with Ponyboy. He says "I thought I was the only person in the world that did so I loned it",by this Ponyboy means that is he the only one that likes movies and reading but, he realizes in chapter 2-3 that Cherry the hot cheerleader is alot like him. They sit and talk not only to find out that they have alot in common. He states that he likes to watch movies alone because there are no distractions and he can understand it better.

The novel also speaks alot about identity. In the first chapter Ponyboy tells us all about his family, where they came from, their background, hair color and eye color. He mentions that his brother Darry has gone through alot in his twenty years - "Darry's gone through a lot in his twenty years, grown up too fast". He says that Sodapop his other brother is different from anybody, he understands everything, almost. Ponyboy mentions his light brown almost reddish hair and his greenish grey eyes along with his long hair, that's longer than most boys wear theirs in the novel.

Ponyboy knows that his friends are different from him and he realizes that he isn't alone. He finds a girl who is similar to him and enjoys the things he does and that he's not alone with liking books and novels. He tries to be a leader in the gang and to jump in to help others at all times while becoming a healer.

Lesson 3 Name Identity

Polite
odd
nice
yappy
brave
observant
young

Lesson 2 Gender and Identity

Fergie with Car advertisement

In this advertisement there is picture of a singer by the name of Fergie. She is  being portrayed in a way that will attract men to buy this car. The message that the company of this car wants to get across is that 'if you guy it, a good looking woman will come along with it'. Some men get the idea that if they buy good looking sports cars women will come chasing after them which is sometimes thought to be true. The identity that is created is one that good looking women like men with nice cars. It portrays women in a general aspect. Not every woman likes a guy with a nice sports car but this is what the media shows.

Dolce & Gabbana advertisement

In the advertisement there is a nice built man laying his body across on a boat with a good looking girl laying next to him. What does this show? It shows that if you wear Dolce and Gabbana cologne a hot girl will come onto you while relaxing on this nice boat in the middle of the ocean. The name of this particular cologne is 'light blue' which is why they use the background of the ocean. The identity that is created here is similar to women standing next to nice cars and modelling. It portrays the same kind of message ' if you wear Dolce & Gabbana, a hot girl will come onto you '.

The way that men and women are portrayed can sometimes be deceiving. In the real world these things are not particularly true, maybe to some extent but not all. As a female, I can relate to the Dolce & Gabbana cologne. I like when guys smell nice because I am attracted to good smells. I personally would not buy a perfume or cologne because of what comes along with it. I would buy it because I like the smell and I want to smell nice.

Pony's English teacher assigns a semester theme for him to write and if he does well he can get a C. He found it hard to do the task because he was overwhelmed. Darry's constant nagging only results in arguments and Darry tries to being Sodapop into the argument but he runs out of the house. Sodapop is found at the park by his brothers and tells them he can't take it anymore. They all agree that they should be sticking together and not pulling each other apart. Pony picks up 'Gone with the wind' and a note from Johnny falls out. He states what the poem 'Nothing Gold Can Stay' really meant. The meaning is that one should not take things for granted, that everyone needs to continue to look at the world as if it is brand new in order to appreciate all the small things. Ponyboy decides that this is his theme topic. He ends the book with how it started in chapter 1.

Forced Marriage Law Article

Citation: "Forced Marriages." Bbc.uk. 2014. N. page. Web. 14 June 2014. <http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-27830815>.

Forced Marriages are becoming a problem in today's society. England has enforced  a new law that is against people being forced into these marriages. Since 2008, courts have been able to issue civil orders to prevent victims that were being forced into marriages. The victims of this particular case consists of Indian, Pakistan and Bangladesh men and women. It has been said that 82% of these people were female, 18% were male and in addition to this 15% were under the age of 15 years old.

In this article the main themes are psychological pressure, saying ‘no’, and domestic slaves. The event occurred because of the creation of a new law in England which is against people being forced into marriages and as a result it has been made an official offence. The event took place to prevent victims from being forced into marriage. Because of this new law you can be sent to prison for five years to prevent people being married against their will.

One of the case studies show that forced marriages are not a good idea. They can be abusive and horrendous. One of the victims mentions that she said told by the mom of her x-husband that she was only there to clean and to be there for her husband at night. She was told by her family members that it was the best thing for her or she would become too modernized. She mentions that she was treated like a prisoner in their house and she wasn't allowed to come out at all.

They state that alot of this happens because of greed and money which was her case but, sometimes it's just cultural.

First, Andy is laying on the sidewalk bleeding in the rain. He is wearing a bright purple jacket and on the back of the jacket it says “THE ROYALS”. On the front of his jacket just over his heart it says his name printed with black thread. It says “Andy”.
Next, Andy realizes that he is dying when he attempts to get help and does not receive any. Andy wondered if Laura would be angry. He originally left to get a pack of cigarettes but never returned. Then, Andy heard footsteps at the other end of the alley. He saw the couple coming into the alley running from the rain. Andy watched them run into the alley laughing together and then duck into the doorway about ten feet from him. He stood there and hungered for Laura’s lips as the couple kissed.

Along came Freddie over to Andy, finally somebody has noticed him! They asked Andy if he was okay. Angela said “let’s get out of here” but Freddie continued to find out what was wrong. Angela and Freddie wanted to be healers but were afraid of getting caught up in the ‘Royals’ gang or even getting caught so they left.
Finally, Laura found him. The jacket only had one meaning now, and that was very obvious. If Andy was not wearing the jacket he would not have been stabbed. The cops continuously told Laura that Andy was dead, he was going to die at any minute. She tried her best to tell them who he was. Laura found Andy in the doorway past midnight and left a dance for him when she found him. She ran until she found a cop. The cop took out his black pad and he flipped it open to blank page and begun writing. “A Royal”, he said. Then he began writing.

Where? Setting: The story occurred in a city down in an alley on a sidewalk in an alley in the pouring rain at night. A boy by the name of Andy was laying on the sidewalk bleeding in the rain. When Andy was trying to receive help from others around him he failed at doing so because, he was dying and had no voice. He was wearing a jacket that read ‘THE ROYALS’ with his name on the back. The Royal was not a good thing and this got him into a lot of trouble in the end.
Why? The reasons: The cause of the conflict is that Andy was wearing clothing that related to a gang and therefore caused him some problems and caused his death. Due to this there was a bad effect which was the fact that Andy no longer had a life ahead of him. Everything he had planned was never going to happen from the moment he was stabbed. He wore a Jacket with the name of a gang printed on it along with his name. In the end, his wife found him and reported it to the cops. When the cops came he was wearing the jacket and could not take it off and hide it therefore, he was in even more trouble than before. Laura which is Andy’s boyfriend, was told that he was going to die and the cop started writing in his black book.
Imagery: “He lifted his face slightly and looking up at the man, and in the rain swept alley he smelled the sickening odor of alcohol”. This piece of information gives us the idea of smell, touch, sight and hearing. The passage on page 2 of the short story states that Andy has been met on the sidewalk by a drunk man. He can smell the alcohol and hear the drops of the rain on the ground. Andy cannot only hear and smell but, he can see the man when he slowly lifts his face off the ground.
Why did Andy want to be identified as “Andy” and not as a Royal?
Andy wanted to be identified as an individual. He didn’t want to be known as somebody who was a part of a gang. He did not want to be known as a perpetrator and as someone who others would be afraid of. It was not his intention to be a part of the gang. He walked innocently on the road and because of his clothing he was stabbed. He wanted to do a lot of things with his girlfriend and hoped to one day marry her and have children. None of this would be possible if he was known as a Royal because his family and wife would also be in danger.
Creative Writing:
 Rain is sweet, I’m Andy.
Little did we know Laura was walking around at night hoping she would find her boyfriend once again? She walked miles before she could find him. It just so happened that when she was walking pass the alley she heard a little screeching sound. She thought to herself “ I better run, I’m alone with no Andy. The minute Laura looked down at the ground there she saw Andy, bleeding in the rain.
She screamed his name “Andy! It’s me Laura!” Andy did not reply. Laura bursted into tears feeling hopeless. She tried to save her husband and in addition to this she helped Andy to remove the jacket that said ‘Royals’.
Andy did not want to be known as Royals, he wanted to be known as Andy. She tried speaking with Andy and all she could see was that he was slowly dying, painfully and it completely broke her heart.
In the end, Laura choose to sit with Andy and take as much care of him as she could. She called the ambulance and got Andy right away to the hospital. When they got to the hospital Andy said his last words, knowing he was going to die he reached out for Laura’s hand and said “I’m sorry this happened, I love you”.
Laura had been beyond broken at this point. She had no hope, no more tears because she cried so much and she was lost without good old Andy.
Laura thought to herself all the things that Andy thought to himself when he couldn’t find her and was alone on the sidewalk. She wondered if she would ever be with him again in heaven.
The End.

Bullying Campaign Final Week

This week I have managed to complete my video and make my public service announcement successfully however, some of the responses of the participants were not. My goal was to challenge the NCC community to treat others in the way they would like to be treated and to become a healer myself. I have accomplished the task of using various media pieces in order to put this video together which I am very thankful for.

In order to get my message across I posted the video on you tube and attached the link to Facebook. I allowed viewers at NCC to access this first and as it was liked and re blogged others were able to view it. The first 3-5 hours were exciting to me because I wanted to see how quickly things could spread on social networks. This was most interesting for me because I do not own a Facebook or you tube account so I was able to see a different side of these networks. In those first few hours I already had 18 views. I wondered where and who those views came from but was happy that others had seen my message and hopefully got something from it.

After the second day of publishing my video I was told that I need to have written permission from the participants that they were okay with the video being exposed to the public. Due to the late notice I was unable to receive that information before posting my video. As a result of a certain misunderstanding I had to remove my video immediately. When I came to class the following day I approached one of the teachers that had been apart of the video and was told that she was very uncomfortable with it being on you tube and Facebook. My intention was not to hurt people or to make fun of anyone by posting the video but, because she felt that she may have said something unpleasant she asked to remove it or to have the principal overlook it. I was very shocked and realized that people are so afraid to share their personal mistakes with others. As people in a christian school we know that all of us have sinned at least once in our lives. We live in a Dystopia community meaning that none of us are perfect. It was perfectly fine what she said and nobody made negative comments on the video or her part in particular.

I have seen the importance in sharing what I believe is right with others around me. It does not matter what people say. They will always be afraid to share their true stories with you and it should never affect what you believe or make you change the way you share your ideas with your community. I am not a perfect christian and neither is anybody in my school community. Although it has been a great time making this video I hope to have it up and running early next week.

Thank you so much to my English teacher for helping me with this video and experimenting with imovie!

Bullying Campaign Experience

During this experience I have discovered that time management is very important. I have also gained the skill of putting a video together on movie maker and being able to add music along with cutting pieces of the video out. This experience has been one that will benefit me in the future and one that will help me in further education. During the process of making this video and getting the information needed it has been hard and fun at the same time. I have found that people are very secure with what they tell others about themselves and are also very afraid of letting others know their faults. It is always easier for other to say ‘I have been a healer’ as supposed to them saying ‘I was bullied because I am fat’. I have interviewed numerous people about perpetrators, victims, bystanders and healers and from these interviews most people have identified themselves as healers because it is the easiest to say. Throughout the course of gaining information I would say that the hardest thing to do has been to get people to participate. It has been a challenge for me to persuade adults and teenagers to share with me some of the experiences with bullying that they have faced but with that comes time. It takes people time to overcome the discomfort of sharing that.

I can say that I have gained a lot of skills from developing this campaign and I know that it will benefit me. I have 1 more week to complete the campaign fully and do the best I can. It has been a pleasure to interview different people and hear their views on what bullying means to them.

Comparison between Maus and Shindler's list

Shindler's list is a movie about a German man by the name of Oscar Shindler. His aim is to turn his factory into a refuge for Jews. He manages to save 1,100 Jews from being gassed at the Auschwitz concentration camp. Maus is a graphic novel about a little boy by the name of Art, he wants to receive information from his father about his memories from the holocaust. Vladek, which is Art's father, starts the story with his life as a young man in Sosnowiec, Poland leading up to the World War 2. Vladek meets and marries a lady by the name of Anja who is a very intelligent woman from a family who helps Vladek to own his own textile factory.
The movie Shindler’s list is introduced as a man who is creating a business from a Nazi Perspective as Maus is introduced with Vladek and wife Anja escaping from the Nazi’s. These two introductions are completely different and I prefer the Shindler’s list view on the holocaust story because it creates a better and more realistic idea.
In Maus I found that the novel was negative towards the Jews and Shindler’s list had a more positive effect on the Jews from what Oscar has portrayed. Something that is very obvious between the two would be the difference in how they made the Jews and Germans obvious to the audience. Maus did a better job at this because they used a unique technique in doing so. The author of Maus used a mouse head for the Jews and for the Germans, a cat head. In Shindler’s list there was no clear difference between the two. It was not as easy to see the difference, which is very important. Another very obvious difference between the two would be the fact that Maus is graphic novel, which is more interesting in comparison to other kinds of literature and Shindler’s list, is a movie. In this case I preferred the movie to the graphic novel because, I understood Shindler’s list more due to the fact that there was a lot more detail and Maus was not as detailed.
At the end of the movie it does not create a lot of suspicion because everyone goes to lay a stone on the graves in comparison to ending with “murder.” I prefer the mysterious type of ending because it forces the reader to continue reading, which is a good technique that the author of Maus has used.

A few things I noticed that are very similar is that they both give a fair understanding of the holocaust and the separation between the Jews and Germans. I also noticed that in both of the films were in black and white. There was no color in the novel or in the film. From doing further research on this book I also discovered that Maus was the first graphic novel to win the Pulitzer Prize. Overall, I think that both were fantastic but I really enjoyed the way that the author of Maus used creative techniques to make the story interesting.

Teaching Experience

During the duration of my bullying campaign, I was given the opportunity to teach two classes, one with children of lower English skills and the other with children of a higher level. If I had to pick one thing that I learnt from this experience it would be the ability to stay patient while teaching people as they tend to take a while to comprehend some of the concepts. During my first day it was scary and nerve racking to know that I was going to teach. The minute I walked into the classroom I felt the joy in my heart that I was going to leave knowing that the kids learnt something new that day. I enjoyed the first 30 minutes of class but, after a while, it was hard for me to continue explaining the terms perpetrators, victims, healers and bystanders. The second day of the teaching was harder for me as the students were not able to communicate clearly with me what they understood and what they didn't . The class also rarely engaged in any form of discussion, therefore it was challenging for me to get information from them. In relation to this I chose to make them act out what they had learnt. This helped me to get the information that I needed for my bullying campaign. My goal was to ask questions regarding my survey and to get information from students on their opinion of the 4 terms mentioned before. I am thankful for my opportunity to teach the kids and I hope that they have gained some information about what a perpetrator, bystander, healer and victim are.

College Week: Divergent Study

Questions 1, 5 & 9

In my opinion, Beatrice was not a reliable narrator. She spoke in the first person throughout the whole novel, on page 29 Beatrice says “I open my eyes and walk to the front of the observation room”, she only relates to herself and does not always tell the truth neither does she always know the truth. For instance, Beatrice’s older brother Caleb wanted to know her fraction after the choosing ceremony and she refused to share this piece of information with him. In chapter thirty-three, Dauntless army gets to Abnegation headquarters and starts killing people. This shows that Beatrice doesn’t know the entire truth of Dauntless. In the beginning she has no clue what Erudite is going to make Dauntless do to the Abnegation. In the end they hurt the faction she was born into. Tris speaks in the first person and she not only relates to herself but she doesn’t make the reader interested by using the word “I” repetitively. The roll of the narrator is to tell the story from all views and perspectives, not only his or hers. Divergent was not a clear example of that. In the novel Beatrice talks a lot about herself. This does not mean that she is selfish but maybe she feels like she is the one that is being attacked the most because her family’s faction and Abnegation (the faction she was born into) is being attacked. Beatrice is one who tries to be somebody that she isn’t and she tries to become brave and courageous. I think she wants to fit into the society of being a born-initiate within Dauntless.

In this novel, there are a few things that do not get explained like what Dauntless Is protecting the city from. I feel that the narrator and the author should have given more information but, it was a smart choice by the author because it allows us as the readers to want to read the other books. The thing that I am most curious about is what will happen to these factions in the end. Will Candor and Amity remain the good ones? Nobody knows. The way that the book was written surely made me curious to attempt reading the second book. It did not make me believe in this dystopian world. I knew that this wasn’t a real world and couldn’t be real. There is not a perfect world or a world of just war but there are groups in almost every society. In the end of the novel the author mentions what she wanted this novel to be like and I think she did a good job by explaining dystopian and utopian societies to the readers.

Questions 3 & 4

The fractionless is a status within the community of Divergent. They are not only fractionless but, they are picked on and cannot be welcomed into any of the fractions even if they wanted to be. This is described as being homeless and almost close to death because, they have to suffer. It is a common practice for Abnegation to help them. The fractionless do have a role in the city and this role is to do the work within the city that nobody wants to do, such as collecting garbage, being janitors, operators of the trains and buses. As a reward for doing all of this they receive small amounts of food and clothes but not enough to survive. Most of the time they feel like dying. It is hard for the fractionless to be a victim of their own society.

In Niagara Christian Community of Schools there are a lot of people that would fit into the factionless situation. In the book factionless are a group of people who do work for others and it is reality in this particular school. There are many times when a group of people such as bullies, may send others to do things for them and these acts would be known as threats. In every society there are those people who are healers, bystanders, perpetrators and victims which we identify in the book.

The five factions are; Candor, Amity, Dauntless, Erudite and Abnegation, these factions can be related to NCC’s community. In this novel the author wants this particular society to be one that is utopian. When a specific place is set up to be perfect society it does not always turn out this way. Some people might think that because NCC is a Christian school it has to be a utopian society but it is like any other community.

The author of this book wanted the society to start out as being seen in a perfect way but later realized this was almost impossible. On page 5 of the book she speaks about why people might enjoy reading about dystopian society’s compared to utopian stories. I think that this novel is one that is made for us all to realize that there is no perfect society and it cannot possibly happen. There are definitely some good aspects of this book that we can use to better our community and should have in our real world. The fact that Candor and Amity are full of peace and honesty is good. Candor and Amity are all about honesty but I do not think that this can happen in any society. This should be a part of today’s society because we as children of God should try to set up Utopian societies even if they may fail. God originally wanted the world to be a utopian society but because we are all sinful human beings this failed to happen.

Questions 11-14

The chapters in the book do not end in cliffhangers. They end with a full explanation of what has happened. They answer all the question, for example, in chapter sixteen Beatrice says, “We started stage one with nine initiates. Now we have seven.” The way that the book portrays this information is very blunt and sharp. It allows us as the reader to think deeply into the story and almost every chapter ends with a short and direct statement. In the book some of the quotes are twists, for example, in chapter fifteen Beatrice ends the page by saying that her mom is Dauntless and this opens up a whole new chapter for us. We begin to think about why and how she became Dauntless. This would be a twist. Some of the chapters do end with answering questions but not all. When Beatrice makes statements such as “my hair blew in my face, I don’t’ know why” this makes me want to keep reading because, I wonder why this happened and makes me wonder if she found this piece of information out. This makes the reader want to read from chapter to chapter by the way that the author portrays the book and makes short statements making you wonder what happened next and it is almost like a mystery.

In my opinion, the supplementary material in the back of the book allows us as the readers to see what each faction is supposed to be and, wants to be. I feel that the manifestoes guided me in a way that I was able to get a better understanding of the book in the sense that they explained what they were meant to be but, did not fully become. If it was written into the book there would be no mysteries. If there were mysteries, it would help us as the readers want to read the other books and allow us to appreciate the novel more because of its creativity.

I think that story will continue with this dystopian society and will end with a dystopian society. In the end of everything there is not a perfect society. We live in sinful society and the author of Divergent cannot change this to be utopian. I say this because, God is the only person who can make the world perfect and nobody can change that. We all want this society that is like Candor and Amity but, truthfully will never happen. I think that in the end there will be a faction that tries to help and tries to heal the city but, will fail. I believe that the characters will learn about themselves as a whole and learn that nobody is perfect or that the society in which they live in. It is hard to control your city and your country because it not only takes more than one person but, it takes the work of God. For example, Martin Luther King tried to integrate blacks and whites. Did this work? Yes, but, it never continued. Martin Luther King owns a very famous speech “I have a dream” he said. He wanted this utopian society but once again the society did not allow this to happen due to the fact that we are not perfect and we have a fatal flaw which allows things like this to go wrong.

In our world today we all have bad societies and no matter who tries to step in and help those society’s they will never be utopian. But may be for a short period of time. It will always fail.

If I were to create a faction, the name of this faction would be called Restoration, they would live underground. This name suits the faction because, they would be the healers of the city and the reason for living underground is because, they know the story all along but do not come visible until everything in the city is totally being destroyed. The strengths of this faction would be the power of being able to sit back and watch the city fight and then being able to come out and do something very powerful to help everyone not just one faction. Their role would be to bring peace to the divergent community and to the characters who are the victims. I think this could and may be successful if it were real.
